State of Mind

Directed by Hopewell Rugoho-Chin’ono, State Of Mind is a powerful, emotional, painful and yet hopeful documentary film looking at mental illness in Zimbabwe. It explores the challenges faced by patients, families, and medical practitioners. It looks at how Dr Dixon Chibanda is challenging the status quo with The Friendship Bench initiative.

Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi wrote the documentary film soundtrack for State of Mind. It is the last known piece of work he produced before he passed on in January 2019.  He also sings a full-length song at the end of the film, a classic from his catalogue.

State of Mind is a political metaphor for what has happened to Zimbabwe with over 40 percent of its citizens suffering from some sort of mental illness disorder. The mental disorders in the country are a reflection of the broken political compass.
